Broken Heroes

Dealing with Thorns...

Had the privilege of speaking at Cypress Bible Church on Sunday.  They have a guy there that does an amazing job with video and making speakers look way better than they really are.  If you are interested in checking it out, here is the link.

This message concentrates on overcoming fatal attractions.

Do you have an addictive personality?  How would you know?  Eat food for comfort? Use alcohol to socialize, always needing a cup in your hand?  Need to constantly stay “connected” while counting likes and followers?  Shop for esteem? Gambling for excitement? Use drugs to self-medicate? Is everything very, very hard to quit?

Judges 16 Imagine living for 20 years free and clear from a besetting sin.  Many believe Samson had a season of victory before he succumbed to his old ways.

What are Samson’s issues?

What do you think Samson looked like?  Rambo Samson or Normal Jewish Man Samson?  Why do you think everyone was stumped by where his power came from?

Describe Delilah (name means “weak one”)?  Irony alert- the strong one is brought down by the weak one.

What would you wish you could have said to Samson in 16:7-14?

  • How should we live in light of this story and the way we may actually live this story out?Action Steps-
    1. Cultivate Intimacy with God- What are the steps ways a person can take to stay close to God?
    2. Understand marriage doesn’t solve a lust problem- If you have a lust problem before marriage you will have one after you put a ring on it.  How does the Gospel strengthen us in our battle against lust?
    3. Build a strategic attitude towards pitfalls- What are steps we can take to protect us from known weaknesses?  How would you define the word FLEE (2 Tim 2:22)?

Prayer Prompt- June 14- NYFLO

Prayer is the Work of the Ministry.

Welcome to my world. Here’s what it looks like:

  • not everyone is married, some are divorced, some are remarried, a couple took advantage of the recent law on gay marriage;
  •  my neighbors seem to have everything—big houses, nice cars, nice looking kids;
  • the guy sitting next to me at Starbucks has a visa to study and make his dreams come true.  In fact, I live in the most diverse city in the US;
  • the girl who plays on my team with whom I am pursuing a friendship, she comes from a broken home;
  • Some middle-aged men and women are in the process of watching their parents age and finish their lives:

My neighborhood has a little bit of everything.  The international.  The atheist. The mocker. The scoffer. The intellectual. The ignorant.  Rich and poor. These are people that need Jesus. These are the people that we have been called to reach. They are my mission field.

What does your mission field look like? I’m sure the faces are different, but the state of their soul before God is not.

Pray for each person on the team to join the mission of God.  You could pray these exact words, “PRAY THAT EACH ONE REACH ONE AND DISCIPLE THAT ONE TO BECOME A DISCIPLER.”
